Tackling climate risk to sustainably intensify smallholder maize farming systems in southern Africa

چکیده

Abstract Sustainable intensification (SI) of low input farming systems is promoted as a strategy to improve smallholder farmer food security in southern Africa. Using the Limpopo province South Africa case study (four villages across climate gradient), we combined survey data (140 households) and quantitative agronomic observations understand climate-induced limitations for SI maize-based systems. Insights were used benchmark agroecosystem model Agricultural Production System sIMulator, which was setup ex ante evaluate technology packages (TPs) over 21-seasons (1998–2019): TP0 status quo (no input, broadcast sowing), TP1 fertiliser (micro dosing), TP2 planting density (recommended), TP3 weeding (all removed), TP4 irrigation, TP5 date (early, recommended), TP6 all (TPs 1–5). An additional TP7 (forecasting) investigated varying line with weather forecasts. Input intensity levels expressed similar challenges risk adaptation, strategies mostly limited adjusted dates densities, less than 2% farmers having access water irrigation. Simulations showed that combining management interventions would be expected lead highest mean maize grain yields (3200 kg ha −1 villages) lowest harvest failure compared individual interventions. Likewise, simulations suggested irrigation alone not result yield gains simple adjustments forecasts indicated could expect turn rainfall variability into an opportunity well worth taking advantage of. Our emphasises need cropping approach addresses multiple crop stresses simultaneously.

Towards a Theoretical Grounding of Climate Resilience Assessments for Smallholder Farming Systems in Sub-Saharan Africa

Resilience assessments are increasingly used to inform management decisions and development interventions across sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). In light of current and future climate change and variability, there is growing interest in applying such tools and frameworks to assess and strengthen the climate resilience of smallholder farming systems. However, these assessments are often undertaken wit...

Food insecurity of smallholder farming systems in B72A catchment in the Olifants River Basin, South Africa

Traditional smallholder farming systems are characterized by low yields and high risks of crop failure and food insecurity. Through a biophysical model, PARCHED-THIRST and a socio-economic farming systems simulation model, OLYMPE, we evaluated the performance of farming practices based on maize yield, gross margin and total family balance over a 10-year period in semi-arid Olifants River Basin ...

Climbing Legumes: An Underutilized Resource With Significant Potential to Intensify 3 Farming on Terrace Walls (FTW) for Smallholder Farmers

44 45 Millions of subsistence farmers cultivate crops on terraces. These farmers face unique challenges 46 including severe shortages of arable land and remoteness leading to poor access to inputs 47 including nitrogen fertilizer. These challenges contribute to human and livestock malnutrition. 48 Terrace walls (risers) as a vertical surface to grow climbing or trailing legumes represents an 49...

Constraints in the Smallholder Farming Systems of Zimbabwe

This paper reviews constraints to crop production, the status of technology development and future research needs of the smallholder farms in the semi-arid areas of Zimbabwe. ZIMBABWE'S agricultural industry consists of two major sectors; the large-scale commercial and the smallholder (communal) sectors. Prior to 1980 production from the communal sector was largely for subsistence requirements....
